Period

The expert on this page

The eye comes from antiques experts: glaze, crackle, foot, base and mark first, then the period range. One clue never settles the date. Place photos in each box (and a rotation video if you have one), add notes, then ask the bot to analyze. The report is for reference, not authentication.

The expert reads in this order

  1. One sentence: what it is, which period it leans toward, how sure.
  2. Look at form, body, glaze, crackle, painting, foot, base, marks, wear and repair. Note any part the photos omit.
  3. What each clue says, and which clues are not enough to decide. One clue does not settle the period.
  4. Of the period, later in the old style, old but repaired, or new made to look old. If you cannot separate them, say so.
  5. A price only when there is a sold sale of the right type and size.

Glaze bubbles, an off-style mark, missing double rings, raised glaze or foot wear alone never settle the date. Do not apply Chinese kiln standards to pieces that are not of that tradition. The bot compares ceramics from many regions (China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Islamic lands, Europe, Southeast Asia) but always names the culture first. Ask only for one or two missing views, usually the base and mark or the unglazed foot rim.
